A celebration of 40 years’ of dedicated service has been recognised at an assembly. Sue Arthur, Acting Vice Chair of Governors, Acting Vice Chair of Finance Committee, Local Authority & Curriculum Governor at Cippenham Nursery School was honoured on Monday with a celebrative assembly and presentation. Sue started at the nursery as a Parent Governor on 1 January 1986, when her eldest son attended, and has been volunteering her time ever since. She then quickly became Chair of Governors and has seen all three of her children through the school and still lives locally. In her time as governor, she has worked with seven headteachers. She said: “What a lovely surprise today has been, I have gained a lot from being a governor here for all these years, I really enjoy getting to know and working with the staff, and it feels like I am doing something productive for the children who attend, and their parents. It has always been a happy positive experience for me, and I actually qualified as a primary teacher after starting as governor here.” The role of a school governor involves giving time to engage fully with school life, critically examining school data and performance, ensuring well informed decisions are made focused on improving outcomes for the children. Through their deep commitment, governors work collaboratively with all staff by offering ideas and helping identify solutions to challenges, as well as visiting regularly and including joining staff on inset days and helping to create a positive, engaged, and forward‑thinking school culture. Councillor Puja Bedi, lead member for children and lifelong learning, said: “It is my pleasure to be here today presenting this certificate to Sue, whose dedication and consistent focus on the best outcomes for the children of Cippenham Nursery School has shone through over her amazing commitment of 40 years. “Selflessly giving up so much of her time and energy, Cippenham Nursery School and indeed Slough is very lucky have her. I have heard so much today about what a positive influence Sue is and once again, thank you very much Sue for all you have done and continue to do for the children, parents and staff here.” Nisha Gill, Headteacher, said: “Sue has provided extraordinary support to the nursery over the years, helping us continue to move forward with confidence and purpose. She is deeply dedicated to her role as a governor and former Chair of Governors, consistently offering valuable advice and thoughtful guidance. “As a headteacher, I truly appreciate having Sue as part of our governing body. She brings a rare combination of kindness, professional expertise—grounded in her background in education—steady reassurance, and constructive challenge. Her contributions strengthen our leadership and our ability to provide the best for our children and families. “Sue is an integral part of Cippenham Nursery School and a highly valued member of our team. She willingly involves herself in inset days, community events, and our fun activity days, always adding insight, and positivity. “Thank you, Sue, for everything you do. We are deeply grateful for your continued commitment and the difference you make.” If you would like to find out more about becoming a school governor, please contact: governors@slough.gov.uk and visit: https://www.slough.gov.uk/schools-slough/governors/3
