Information sent on behalf of Neighbourhood Watch

This is a message from Val McPherson Voce Chair of Princes Risborough and District Neighbourhood Watch Association.
Although the Nottingham Knockers have not arrived in Princes Risborough and some of the outlying villages and hamlets, but I am sure they will pay a visit.

I have been informed by a Co-ordinator that a young man called at her door this afternoon in Longwick trying to sell his goods from a black holdall on his back. She told him to leave the area .

These men are called Nottingham Knockers or previously "the duster sellers". They are normally young men that turn up on your doorstep with a huge holdall full of dusters, household goods such as polish, dishcloths items, and try and get you to buy their goods at high inflated prices that are of poor quality. Often they have said to have no change in order to receive a note and nowadays they are using hand devices to take card payment.

These Nottingham Knockers normally work in teams of six across an area and arrive by a Van or mini bus to "work the area". They often say they are ex-convicts trying to make a new start in life by working for a living and show false ID cards stating they are part of a probation scheme or sometimes claim to be deaf showing an appropriate card. All these ID's are false as well as their stories they tell. The probation service does not employ young men to do this kind of work or any work.

A number of people feel sorry for them and just buy something, but will then find they keep returning to try again and again and the items get dearer each time. Often these sellers are professional Criminals, who have lists of houses where they know they will have a chance of success.

  • Do not deal with "Nottingham Knockers" .
  • It is not "rude" to say NO and close the door to these sellers.
  • NEVER allow them into your home.
  •  Do not pay CASH  or by CARD on the doorstep.

Please make sure that your elderly neighbours/ friends/ relatives  do not fall victim to this kind of Doorstep Selling. If you are suspicious of any activity then please report to the Police.

I have informed the police we have " Nottingham Knockers in our Area.

Thank you
